Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Newport

Newport’s neighborhoods each bring a distinctive character, from lively waterfront streets to tranquil historic districts. Your choice of area shapes your experience, whether you crave ocean views, nightlife, or a quiet, family-friendly retreat.

Downtown Newport

Downtown Newport buzzes with energy, making it the prime base for first-time visitors and nightlife enthusiasts. Expect rates between $150 and $250 per night. Thames Street, a central artery, is lined with boutique shops and lively pubs, while the iconic Bowen’s Wharf offers waterfront dining and sailing tours. For breakfast or a midday pick-me-up, head to Corner Café, famed for hearty omelets and artisan coffee. The International Tennis Hall of Fame, just a short walk away, is a must-visit for sports fans. Downtown’s central location allows you to walk nearly everywhere, but the nearest transit option is the Newport Gateway Center, with local RIPTA buses connecting across the city in under 10 minutes. This area is best for solo female travelers, couples seeking nightlife, and foodies wanting a rich selection of restaurants at their doorstep.

Bellevue Avenue

Bellevue Avenue is Newport’s most opulent neighborhood, home to Gilded Age mansions and manicured avenues. Hotel prices range from $350 to $700 per night, catering to luxury travelers and history buffs. The legendary Breakers Mansion, a Vanderbilt summer “cottage,” anchors the district, while the elegant Café Zelda offers upscale New England cuisine in a romantic setting. The Cliff Walk, Newport’s famed coastal trail, starts nearby and provides sweeping Atlantic views. Bellevue Avenue’s leafy streets remain peaceful after dusk, making it ideal for couples on a romantic escape or travelers interested in Newport’s architectural heritage. The closest transit hub is the Bellevue/Salve Regina bus stop, with a 5-minute ride to city center via RIPTA. Expect concierge service, spa access, and proximity to Newport’s best museums.

Fifth Ward

The Fifth Ward is a residential enclave with a welcoming, authentic vibe, perfect for families and those planning longer stays. Nightly rates run $130 to $200. King Park, a green waterfront space, is the main landmark, popular for picnics and sunsets over Newport Harbor. For casual family dining, Fifth Element serves wood-fired pizzas and craft brews. The neighborhood’s relaxed pace appeals to groups and families seeking quieter nights, but with easy reach to downtown’s attractions. The nearest transit is the Morton Avenue bus stop, connecting to downtown Newport in 7 minutes. Fifth Ward offers more spacious accommodations, often with kitchenettes and parking, making it the go-to choice for multi-generational groups or travelers with children.

Goat Island

Goat Island delivers resort-style luxury just across the causeway from downtown. Hotels here cost $300 to $600 per night and cater to couples and those seeking a pampered getaway. The Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina is the island’s signature property, with sweeping views of Newport Bridge and on-site spa facilities. Dine at Scarpetta, an Italian restaurant with a waterfront terrace perfect for sunset cocktails. Goat Island’s isolation ensures tranquility, yet you’re a 5-minute shuttle ride from downtown via hotel-operated transport. The nearest public transit is the Gateway Center; from there, a short taxi or hotel shuttle completes the journey. This neighborhood is best for honeymooners, spa seekers, and travelers wanting luxury amenities with a private-island feel.

The Point

The Point is one of Newport’s oldest neighborhoods, known for its quiet, cobblestone streets and colonial-era homes. Hotel rates typically run $140 to $220 per night, attracting history lovers and travelers seeking a peaceful retreat. Hunter House, a meticulously preserved 18th-century mansion, is the neighborhood’s crown jewel and open for guided tours. Belle’s Café, tucked inside the Newport Shipyard, is a local favorite for breakfast by the docks. The Point is ideal for solo travelers, writers, or anyone needing a serene atmosphere, while still being within a 10-minute walk to downtown. The closest transit is the Bridge Street bus stop, with a 6-minute ride to city center. Expect smaller, boutique properties, often set in repurposed historic buildings.

Easton’s Beach (First Beach)

Easton’s Beach, also called First Beach, is Newport’s best bet for budget travelers and families wanting direct beach access. Nightly rates run $100 to $150. The main attraction is the broad sandy beach itself, with gentle surf and a vintage carousel for kids. Flo’s Clam Shack is the go-to eatery for fried seafood baskets and creamy chowder. The area’s laid-back vibe draws sunseekers, surfers, and groups on a tight budget. Accommodations here are often motels or simple inns, with the Atlantic Beach bus stop providing a 12-minute ride to downtown. This stretch is best for families, students, and anyone prioritizing the ocean over city-center nightlife.

Tipping: Tipping is customary in Newport, as throughout the US. Expect to tip 15-20% at restaurants and for hotel housekeeping, while taxi drivers appreciate 10-15%. Always check your bill, as some venues may include gratuity for larger groups.

Currency: The official currency is the US dollar (USD). Exchange rates fluctuate, but $1 USD is the standard unit. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, though it’s wise to carry some cash for small purchases or tips.

July and August bring festivals and warmer beaches, while September and October are ideal for mild weather and fall events. November to March is quieter, with cool temperatures (0–6°C/32–43°F) and lower hotel rates.
